The Strait of Gilbralter

Monday, December 18, 2023

Good news!  Kristi was much better this morning. We made it down for breakfast by 10am.  Today we are cruising the west end of the Mediterranean and will be passing through the Strait of Gibraltar, back out to the Atlantic, on our way to Lisbon. The captain told us we should get a good view of the Rock of Gibraltar at about 2:45pm (it was midnight when we passed through on our eastern journey).

The view from our stateroom this morning: the Spanish Sierra Nevada mountains.

After breakfast we headed to the theater for a cooking presentation by the Executive Chef and the Head Chef of the Britannia Restaurant (the main dining room where we usually have dinner) — this guy stole the show with his wit and humor.  He did a surf and turf dish while the Executive Chef made beef Wellington. It was a well done, fun  preservation.

Next up, some Cribbage and then the Cha Cha … an introductory lesson.

Instead of a full lunch we opted to have a little cheese and crackers before we headed to the final presentation by the mountaineer. It’s a Q&A session.

After the talk we went up on deck to view the Rock of Gibraltar as we passed through the Strait of the same name. The weather was amazing as we passed through. We could easily see Spain on the starboard side and Morocco on the port. We sat up above the forward pool, on deck 10, and enjoyed the best weather we've had.

It was so nice we decided to have our afternoon tea out on deck.  Then we played a little ping pong … don’t ask Kristi who won … it was all in good fun.

This ship has a "first class."  While they can mix with us in steerage, we can't get up to decks 11 or 12 without a key. I feel a little bit like Jack.  😂
A look at their private decks from down below …

We booked this cruise so quickly and last minute, we hadn’t read much about the ship and cruise line. So after booking we learned that it has dress code standards — as it should … 😂.  Jim did a little clearance shopping and Kristi did some thrift store shopping just before the cruise so we didn’t stick out. Actually, the dress code is not so strict, except maybe for the dining room. And, there are three formal nights. The last one, in a few days is a 1920’s theme, which we are looking forward to. We have had fun dressing a little more than we might usually for a vacation.

It is also fun to be two of the few Americans on the ship. Most passengers are British. One might not think there would be many differences, but there enough to make us feel sometimes like the American lady on the Titanic, although we try not to be too brash. 🤪
We would definitely sail on Cunard again.

After a beautiful afternoon on deck we headed to our cabin for a respite before getting ready for dinner.  Dinner in the dining room has been really good and we like dressing up for it too.

Tonight we were seated with a new couple and a couple we sat with before, Mary and David. We had a great time.

After dinner we enjoyed the show in the theater — a woman who sang and played the trumpet. It was time for us to turn in after that. It was a great day at sea.
